The West Coast's first Cava Grill location opened today, with a traditional free food/unch give-away. The line stretched around the block as hungry shoppers & visitors clamored to get a taste of the brand-new restaurant, and to get a first look at the store's modern, clean design. Located at the Village at Topanga, the fast-casual Mediterranean restaurant is known on the East Coast, but expanding westward with the help of Valerio Architects. Look for more Cava Grill locations coming soon!
The first Cava Grill on the West Coast, brought to you by Valerio Architects, is ready to open at Westfield's Village at Topanga. Today is their 'free lunch' dry run, and the restaurant officially opens tomorrow. This is the latest location for the Mediterranean quick-casual chain which might be familiar to those from or visiting Washington DC/Virginia/Maryland, where the chain started. With Valerio's help, this will be the first of several in Southern California.
The #valerio blog will bring you more photos from today's opening and a look inside the restaurant tomorrow. Congrats to the Cava team and the Valerio restaurant group for delivering on this challenging project- a result which is well worth it, both in the sense of design and menu quality!
This morning some of the Valerio crew took a guided tour of our most recent project in Beverly Hills, at the Fendi store on Rodeo Drive. The under-construction project is moving along, with wiring and systems going in while walls are still open, although soon they will be closed and finishes and millwork will be placed, and then the store will really start to come together.
The tour was led by Project Architect Jamie Pancino, who has been working on the complex project for nearly a year. Located in an existing three-story (with basement) building at the prime corner of Rodeo Drive & Wilshire Blvd, was formerly a Burberry store and then the temporary location for another of Valerio's clients, Louis Vuitton, while their flagship store was renovated next door. The project entails dividing the building for Fendi and another tenant to split the space, creation of a new feature stair, and a complete re-do of the interior spaces into new retail sales areas and back-of-house support spaces.
It may be hard to tell from these photos given the rough condition of the site, but the finished product will be a shining gem of a space as Fendi deserves on one of the world's premiere shopping streets. Check back with the #valerio blog periodically, as we'll be posting updates through out construction through the completion & opening of the store.
Valerio is proud to announce yet another high-profile client to join our clientele of high-end luxury retailers- Dolce & Gabbana. Valerio's luxury retail team will be working with Dolce & Gabbana on a local high-profile project, and our team is very excited to get started! We are all looking forward to working with our new clients, and look forward to a long and successful collaboration on this and many more projects to come!

This weekend the Valerio blog stopped off at Westfield Topanga, to see the progress of LA's first Cava Grill, by Valerio Architects. The whole center is in a mad-dash rush to the finish, and the Cava Grill space is no exception. While storefront still needs to go in, interior finishes are coming together as is the installation of equipment and lighting.
Westfield Topanga and Cava Grill will both open later this month, the #valerio blog will have finishing/completed, & opening day photos in future posts
Happy Labor Day from Valerio Architects! In honor of the holiday, our hardworking staff has the day off and our offices are closed. We will be back at work tomorrow, Tuesday, September 8th, for normal business hours.
Here's the latest photos of the construction progress at the Oakley Flagship store on Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, California. We don't want to give too much away, so we'll let the pictures speak for themselves, but the store will be pretty cool when it opens later this year. More updates to come as the progress continues!
This weekend is a three-day weekend, in honor of Labor Day. In honor of the holiday, our office will be closed on Monday, and we'll all be back to work on Tuesday, September 8th.
As we often do before a holiday weekend, we will be closing our office at 3 PM on Friday, September 4th, to get a head start on the festivities and let those travelling out of town a chance to get ready. Please be sure to reach us before 3 PM on Friday if you need us!
Enjoy the holiday!
The Mendocino Farms Santa Monica project is humming along, as you can see the 'sticks' are up, utilities and piping is going in, and equipment is on order.
While there is much work to be done, the progress is evident and in no time at all everyone can enjoy a delicious sandwhich by the sea!
Valerio Architects is happy to announce that we've picked up another client! Nekter Juice Bar, based in Orange County recently came to Valerio to assist with new locations for Southern California, and our team is getting started right away on two local stores to open early next year. This is a homecoming of sorts for Valerio, as we started back in the 1990s working for another juice/smoothie concept which helped pave the way for Nekter and other health-concious juice/smoothie stores. Our team is excited to work with the Nekter team on these new locations, and to keeping their store designs as fresh as their products!
For the past few months Valerio has been helping Umami Burger design a new location for their restaurant in Santa Monica, which will be relocating soon. Construction is finally underway at the Umami space, located at the corner of Broadway & 5th Street. As the project develops, the #valerio blog will bring you more photos of the construction progress and completed restaurant within a few short months.
Here are some photos from today's site visit to the first Southern California location for Cava Grill- to open this fall at Westfield's Village at Topanga. Cava Grille is a Mediterranean quick-casual restaurant, popular in the Northeast, from Maryland to Virginia and the greater Washington DC area.
Cava came to Valerio last year to assist with their new Southern California locations, and the Woodland Hills restaurant should be the first, planned to open with the Westfield Village at Topanga project. See the images at left, and come bak to the #valerio blog for more updates as opening gets closer this fall!
The Tender Greens location in downtown San Francisco, at 30 Fremont, was completed a few years ago. But this gem was recently discovered by Business Insider Magazine, after they recieved an investment from the Shake Shack co-founder. They profile the restaurant and its delicious food on their website (see link below). We love the food too, but if you want to see more of the architecture, there are a few images in the article and more to the left.
Valerio is proud to announce that the latest Moschino boutique, located in New York City's Soho neighborhood, is now open! This is the second Moschino stand-alone store for Valerio, after their Los Angeles flagship in West Hollywood. This location is stark white and a simple design, the plain architecture to act as a neutral 'wrapper' for Moschino's avant garde and bold designs. If these pictures make you a little confused, it's because the merchandising team filled the space with oversized mannequins, handbags, and coat hangers to display the merchandise and distort the perspective and sense of the space. Congrats to project contractor Michilli and the Moschino team on a successful project!
On Sunday, August 2nd, there is planned utility work that may affect power to Valerio's offices. While this work is taking place on a Sunday and is not likely to affect our normal operations, emails may not get through until later in the day or Monday. If you receive a return undeliverable message, please know that incoming emails will queue and be delivered once power is restored. We expect to be back to normal by opening time on Monday morning.
Here are the latest images of the construction progress of Tender Greens in Westwood Village. This exciting project continues to take shape, and while several trades and areas are working at once, there still is a long way to go to complete the conversion of this former restaurant in an historic brick building.
In these photos you can see that structural upgrades and modifications are complete, soffit & low wall framing is ongoing, as is advanced utility work. Even with all the heavy construction underway, some finish work is begining such as tile flooring for the future kitchen area.
The Moschino shop in Soho, New York City, is nearly complete. The project contractor Michilli is working hard to complete the finishing details for an opening planned for next week. In these photos you can see some of the oversized props and merchandising displays that will make this store unique- more surprises are covered up under the black tarps. Check back in with the #valerio blog and we'll post photos of the completed store next week!
Today we closed up shop and headed down PCH for some fun in the summer sun- a picnic and beach activities at Bolsa Chica State Beach. Besides sunbathing and the opportunity to hang out socially outside of the office, we played volleyball and had some other team-building activities. We were treated to a BBQ from Artin, former Valerio employee, friend of the office, and wicked good chef!
Thank You to Niccolo & the Valerio adminstration for hosting this event, and especially to Anna for coordinating it!
Today Valerio's office is closed, and we're all hanging out a Bolsa Chica State Beach in Orange County. The weather is great, and we'll be enjoying beach activities and an Armenian-food picnic later.
While we're taking a much-deserved break from the pressures of the office, we are also engaging in some staff development and teamwork exercises, so it's not all fun-in-the-sun (although these should be pretty fun too). You can see the results of our beach day on our @valerio office blog (see link below), and we'll all be back in the office on Monday, July 20th, refreshed and ready to assist you with your projects!
Valerio Architect's office will be closed this Friday, July 17th, for our staff to attend a picnic and development day at Bolsa Chica State Beach in Huntington Beach. In addition to teamwork-building exercises, we will be enjoying the summer weather and California surf with a beach picnic for our staff & their families.
Thus, this Friday our office will be closed. If there is anything you need from us, please be sure to reach us by the end of day on Thursday, July 16th. Thank you and enjoy your weekend!
Hard to believe, but this space will soon become the slick sales floor of Italian fashion house Moschino. The Soho location is being transformed into a white box shell space to show off Moschino's unique fashions, handbags, luggage, and accessories. Although it looks like a mess right now, the project contractor Michilli and Valerio's architecture and program management teams are hard at work to get this space into a crisp modern showroom, and it should be complete in just a few short weeks! Check back in with the #valerio blog for further updates, and completed space images!
In honor of the Independence holiday, our office will be closed on Friday, July 3rd, and we will be closing our office at 3 PM on Thursday, July 2nd, to get a head start on the festivities and let those travelling out of town a chance to get ready.
Enjoy the holiday weekend, we'll all be back to work on Monday, July 6th.

Tonight was the grand opening party for Mendocino Farms at UCI in Irvine. The second location by Valerio Architects, we were pleased to take part in the celebration and see how the restaurant came out! This location features and indoor-outdoor feel, with the seating spilling out on to an outdoor patio with a tree canopy overhead, and the cornhole bean bag toss game brought inside.
The restaurant opens on June 8th, if you find yourself hungry and near the university in Irvine, come and check it out!
Valerio Architects is on a roll- we're happy to announce that we've picked up another client- our 6th major national or international client for 2015, one for each month of the year so far! The Joint Chiropractic, a national chain of no-insurance 'drop in' Chiropractic clinics, will be making a major expansion throughout Southern California, and has come to Valerio to assist with these new locations as well as developing new interior design concepts for the company. We look forward to working with everyone at The Joint and getting to work right away on the first three new locations!
The first location for Academia Barrilla, designed and managed by Valerio Architects in New York City, was recently featured in the design section of Foodservice Equipment Reports (FER Magazine), a trade publication focused on restaurant equipment and management. The six page article was lavishly illustrated with a floor plan of the project, and several images, including full-page and multi-page spreads. Our principal Niccolo Valerio was quoted on the design aspects of the restaurant.
You can see the spread in the images at left, and you can read the article on FER's website using the link below.
Monday May 25th is Memorial Day. In honor of the holiday, our office is closed this day. We wish you a happy Memorial Day, whether you are taking advantage of the three-day weekend for a little vacation or relaxation, or doing something reverential in honor of those who have served. Our team will all be back to work on Tuesday, May 26th.
Enjoy the holiday!
Here are some photos of the latest construction progress at Tender Greens in Westwood village. Dickinson Cameron, the project contractor, is continuing to structurally support the building, frame out new walls, install ducting & equipment, and even starting to restore some of the building's period details.
It may not look like much right now, but this empty shell will soon become the newest Oakley flagship store, located on Thirsd Street Promenade in Santa Monica, California. Slated to open by the end of the year, this unique multi-level store will make a statement along the famous shopping street, infusing Oakley's singular aesthetic into the beachside community. The Valerio team has been hard at work on this project, ever since completing a 5th Avenue Flagship for Oakley in New York City. Stay tuned to the #valerio blog for project updates as construction rolls along!

This week's Los Angeles Business Journal asked about custom residential architecture: 'Would you buy an architecturally important home?', and asked our principal Niccolo Valerio to respond. Niccolo said no, he wouldn't: "Being an architect", he said, "it would be difficult to justify the added cost. On residential properties, I typically focus on the site assets, like slope, views, orientation, etc, rather than focus on the house itself". He added: "Building in Southern California is easy, and often less costly, than what the premium would be for an architecturally significant property".
The article was in the May 4th issue of the LABJ, an image of which is located at left. The paper's website is subscription-only, otherwise we'd share a link!
Academia Barilla, the first location for the new fast-casual Italian food company located in New York City will be profiled in an upcoming issue of an industry trade magazine, Foodservice Equipment Reports (FER Magazine). This magazine is used by professionals in the food service industry to keep up on the latest trends and technology in food service equipment, layouts, and concepts, and they asked to feature Academia Barilla to explore the development of a new concept from planning to execution.
Firm Prinicipal Niccolo Valerio was interviewed, along with the CEO of Barilla USA, and Frank Muller, the kitchen designer who assisted the Valerio team on the project.
The article will contain many images and a floor plan of the project, and we will post the whole article on this blog shortly.
Come with us through the barricade door and a take a peek inside Valerio Architects' latest Tender Greens, this one in Westwood Village. The space is a former Alcupulco Mexican restaurant, abandoned for many years, and it also includes a former internal patio which was closed in for many years. We're planning a beautiful restaurant here, referencing this historic brick building and the exciting neighborhood of Westwood, although it's hard to tell from the current state of the site! Check back with the #valerio blog for construction updates and eventually, completed and opening photos!
Panda Express, the nationwide leader in fast-casual Asian food, recently teamed with Valerio Architects to work on existing & new Panda Express restaurants throughout Southern California, as well as design concepts & prototypes for alternate restaurant concepts. Valerio's restaurant team can't wait to work with the Panda Express team!

Here are before & after shots of the Starbucks at Highland & Willoughby in Hollywood, California, recently completed by Valerio Architects. It's hardly recongnizable as the same structure, as the original building was in such a dilapadated condition, having been abandoned for nearly 20 years.
The Art Deco historic former gas station was repurposed into a drive-though and walk-up Starbucks through the hard work of the Valerio and Starbucks team, and the project contractor, KDC Construction.
Click on the arrows at left to see full before & after images of the transformation!
Always on the search for young talent and hard workers interested in joining our dynamic & fast-paced office, Valerio will be attending upcoming local Architecture job fairs. Valerio is proud to announce the opening of the newest Starbucks location- and it's not just any old coffeeshop. The walk-up & drive-through location in South Hollywood is an adaptive re-use of an historic 1930's Gilmore Gas station. The location had been abandoned for many years, and the Valerio team, along with Starbucks and the project contractors, worked hard to transform the derelict gas & service station into a new, clean Starbucks, complete with new lighting, signage, landscaping, and restored period details.
See links below for some local articles on the opening, and search the #valerio blog for more info on the project & construction progress photos, including amazing images of the site in its original condition!

A Valerio team member visited the site of our latest Starbucks Coffee location on Highland & Willoughby early this morning and while the location isn't quite ready to start dispensing coffee, the fence is down and it will be opening soon. The true beauty of the this restored historic structure can be seen in the pre-dawn light. We know the project will look spectacular once fully lit up & operating, be it in the LA sun, radiating with neon at night, and all times inbetween.
The Valerio team is proud to announce our latest client to join our growing roster of high-end, luxury, and European fashion retailers: La Perla. To those unfamilliar, La Perla is a luxury Italian women's clothing company, specializing in lingerie. Valerio will be working with La Perla on new store locations, check in with the #valerio blog for construction photos and opening announcements for these new locations in coming months.
Mendocino Farm's latest location opened today in Westlake Village/Thousand Oaks. The opening was eagerly anticipated, as by the time the restaurant opened for lunch a line of about 50 hungry people had gathered! This location is the first Mendocino Farms for Valerio Architects, and we're proud of how the location came out! A former deli in a dated shopping center, the restaurant was part of a complete make-over for the Oaks Center. Search 'Mendocino Farms' or 'Westlake' in the search box above to see images of the before & construction progress photos of this location. Congrats to the Mendocino Farms team, Valerio Architecture + Program Management teams, and PKJ construction for all their hard work, their dedication to the project really shows in the final product!
The latest location for fast-growing quick-casual seafood brand Slapfish opened recently in Newport Beach, California. The project by Valerio Architect's restaurant team took a former Chinese restaurant at shopping center end-cap location, and transformed the dreary space into an open, fresh, and modern environment to enjoy Slapfish's delicious offerings.
Valerio is happy to announce another new client for our busy and growing Architecture studio: Flywheel Sports. The spin-based sport studio, based out of New York, will be expanding throughout California and has turned to Valerio's expertise in the local markets for both architectural and permitting/entitlement services for multiple new locations. For those unfamillar, Flywheel gym locations feature a large spin cycling stadium, bar classes, and in-house locker/shower rooms. We're happy to be working for Flywheel and their team, some of which we've known for years through other brands, and looking forward to the challenge of a multi-unit roll out over the next few months!
Valerio is proud to announce yet another addition to the list of luxury retail clients Valerio has the pleasure of working with: Dior. The French fashion house, a brand of LVMH (Louis Vuitton), has seen our work on several of Vuitton's locations throughout the US, and has asked us to work with them on several upcoming 'shop in shop' locations for this year. All of us at Valerio are thrilled to be working with the team at Dior, and looking forward to many more stores and a long, successful partnership.
Prada, the Italian fashion house, has recently hired Valerio to help with new West Coast locations. Our luxury retail team is looking forward to the challenge, and working with the Prada store development team on beautiful new locations. Check in with the #valerio blog in the coming weeks for news about the new exciting locations, and we'll be able to share more news and images of the newest boutiques.
The Moschino flagship in West Hollywood, the only stand-alone store from the Italian fashion house is now open. Valerio Architects is proud to have contributed to this striking boutique in the heart of West Hollywood's design district. More known for furniture & interior design than clothing, Beverly Boulevard is getting a new look with the Moschino showroom, which takes over a vacant former art gallery. The space is minimal, with large glass storefront panels, high ceilings, and bright white finishes, all designed to create a neutral background for Moschino's bold designs.
The opening of the store has attracted considerable attention from the local & fashion press, see links below.
Valerio is pleased to announce that the new Moschino showroom is complete and nearly ready to open. As you can see from these images, the space is ready for the Italian design house's avant-garde fashions, and the stark white and metal/reflective finishes will be a clean and neutral background for the colorful clothing, handbags, and accessories. This location is the first stand-alone Moschino showroom in the US, and should be opening within the next week to great anticipation. Check back here to see more photos of the store as it prepares to open.
Valerio's project for Slapfish, the fast-casual seafood shack, is coming along nicely in Newport Beach. As you can see from these pictures, the store is mostly complete and finishing touches continue through the restaurant. We'll update the #valerio blog with final photos once it opens.
We wish you a prosperous Holiday Season and a Happy New Year.
Please note that our office will be closed from December 25th 2014 through January 2nd, 2015. We will reopen on January 5th, 2015
Valerio has many great clients, and we're lucky enough to work for some of the best restaurants and food establishments in the business. But you'll have to excuse us if we have a new favorite: Salt & Straw, a quirky niche ice cream shop known for its small batch and unique, limited availability flavors is growing from its roots in Portland, Oregon, and looking to become everyone's favorite neighborhood ice cream shop. While they have a few LA-area locations already, Salt & Straw has teamed up with Valerio to open many more locations in 2015 and beyond.
Valerio is happy to announce the pick-up of a new client: Umami Burger. The well known and wildly popular 'better burger' fast-casual restaurant started in Los Angeles and has spread from coast to coast. Valerio will be working the Umami team and SBE hospitality group on new locations for Umami as well as design updates and concepts for the Umami Brand. We look forward to working with our partners at Umami, on new and exciting locations starting next year.
Those on the West Coast may be unfamilliar with the Cava Mezze Grill restaurant, but it's made quite an impression in the East Coast/New England corridor, and will be earning more positive impressions throughout Southern California soon. The fast-casual Mediterranean food concept, with fresh food and modern interior design, has teamed up with Valerio's restaurant studio to work on the development of several new locations. We can't say too much yet, but before long you might be seeing a Cava Grill in your neighborhood. If you can't wait that long, check in with the #valerio blog, and we'll bring you updates on the latest locations.
The building that houses Valerio's LA office is without power this morning, causing Valerio to operate at a reduced capacity. As the outage is expected to last into the afternoon, most staff have been sent home. Emails to the office will queue and eventually get through, and you may get some replies from your project PM (a dedicated bunch). Your PM is also available via their cell phones.
We expect to be back for business as normal by tomorrow morning, please bear with us as we deal with this issue, and apologies for any delays or inconveniences.
Tender Greens at University Center Irvine, adjacent to the UC Irvine campus, held their grand opening today. This location was highly anticipated in the campus community and provides another option to the nearest Tender Greens located at the nearby Irvine Spectrim center, also by Valerio Architects.
Valerio is proud to be part of the Tender Greens team- this location is the 11th Valerio Tender Greens new store or location to open in the past few years. More Tender Greens news will come to the blog soon, with three more locations in construction, and more on the drawing boards. Once we have final photos of UCI Tender Greens for our portfolio, we will post it to our website, and the #valerio blog.
Congratulations to two Valerio clients for making the Orange County Buisness Journal's list of largest restaurant chains headquartered in Orange County! The Habit Burger, for whom Valerio has completed many locations in Southern California, Arizona, and Utah, was ranked #16 on the list, up four spots. John's Incredible Pizza, the parent company of Burrissimo, a concept Valerio did a location for in Brea, was also on the list, coming at number 25.
Ruby's restaurants was also on the list at number 20, Valerio has done Ruby's locations for our client HMS Host, a concessionaire at John Wayne Airport in Orange County. Congrats to all of the companies on the list, Valerio is proud to be working with some of the best in the business!

Enjoy the holiday, we'll all be back to work on Monday, July 7th.
Valerio's project for Starbucks to convert a historic former gas station, sitting derelict and vacant for years, into a new walk-up/drivethrough Starbucks is gaining local attention. Both the Larchmont Buzz & Curbed LA blogs have picked up the story, in which Entitlements Director Elizabeth Valerio and a Starbucks spokesperson discuss the restoration of the 1935 building, and its adaptation to a new cafe. Please see the links below to the article, and check the #valerio blog for further project updates.

What a difference a week makes! Today Valerio Architects was on-site for a punchwalk of the latest Tender Greens at University Center in Irvine. The space is complete except for a few finishing touches, and the contractor's remaining crew is working hard to get the location ready for its grand opening soon. The construction crew worked long & hard to get the space ready, compare to the in-construction photos below from the pre-punch walk only last week. More information on opening soon!
Construction of the Tender Greens at University Center in Irvine is coming along, as can be seen in these photos from a pre-punch visit yesterday. Finishing touches are continuing, while delivery of kitchen equipment and seating makes it hard to work around in the site- from these pics it's hard to get a sense of the finished space, but you can see the strong light from the large skylight over the dining area, and some details such as the custom banquette seating the Valerio team designed. More info to come on this location's wrap-up, and opening this summer!
Valerio's latest Starbucks has begun construction at the famous Hollywood intersection of Sunset Blvd & Vine Street. The location was formerly a Go Burger spot, and is in the base of a high-end residential tower, shared by other Valerio clients such as Tender Greens (this location not by Valerio), and around the corner, Chipotle (by the Valerio team).
The contractor has completed demo and has started framing and plumbing & mechanical systems & distribution, as you can see in these photos. Although the exterior still has Go Burger's signs up, the new exterior will be installed soon- all work will progress fast to meet the mid-July opening.
The construction of Valerio's Louis Vuitton project at Plaza Frontenac in St Louis continues at a good pace. In this construction update photos provided by the contractor you can see the millwork is having a coat of custom plaster hand-applied, and the storefront is taking shape.
The newest Apex store at Chandler Fashion Center in Chandler, Arizona is nearly ready to open. Today Valerio did the traditional punchlist walkthrough, and while there is still much to be done, the store is looking great and will be finished up later this week. Here are some images of the store in its current condition while the contractors race to complete the flooring, storefront, and display fixtures. Look later this week for completed store photos.
The Louis Vuitton remodel & expansion for Plaza Frontenac in St. Louis, Missouri, is coming together as you can see from these photos. The ceiling and flooring have been finished (flooring is protected and not visible yet), millwork installation is progressing, several of the custom display walls are wired up, lighted, and finished. The project will double the size of the previous store, and is scheduled to open in early summer.
Thanks to the project contractor, Dimension 1 for these images.
The Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council (GWNC) approved Valerio's proposed Starbucks at their meeting last night. The project, which converts a dilapidated but historic Streamline Moderne style gas/service station into a new Starbucks with exterior patio and drive-through, was enthusiastically reviewed by the 17-member council, who is excited to see development on the property, which has sat unused and deteriorating for more than 20 years.
Design Director Jamie Pancino and Entitlements team member Alicia Thueme were on hand to present the project and respond to questions. The project was approved with minor conditions, and will now continue to work its way through the city approval process, with final approval expected this summer.
Stay tuned to the #valerio blog, as we will report on this unique project as it moves forward, with more images, drawings, and updates
Yesterday some of the Valerio team took at trip to the jobsite in Downtown Los Angeles for our latest Tender Greens restaurant, under construction at the Pac Mutual building. Framing and in-wall utility work is continuing and will be wrapping up soon, so this visit was timed to get a last look before the walls start to be closed up.
Although the location won't open until later this summer, the signage is already up and we've been hearing that downtown workers & residents are already inquiring when this location will open so they can come in for a meal! We'll continue to post updates on construction, so you can stay informed of our construction progress, and make your lunch plans as soon as the project opens.
Tonight, Valerio is presenting two important Starbucks projects to local neighborhood councils- one in the San Fernando Valley at Van Nuys & Heartland, and one in South Hollywood at Highland & Willoughby. The location on Highland is proposed for the historic Gilmore gas station, a neighborhood icon despite its current derlict appearance. Valerio's proposal (seen in the pics here) re-habs and expands the existing building & canopies, while re-imagining the site for walk-up, patio, and drivethrough customers.
Tender Greens had its official grand-opening today, where Burbank's Mayor cut the ceremonial ribbon and welcomed the popular fast-casual restaurant to Burbank's main shopping district. While the location still needs a few finishing touches, such as the artwork on the walls and chalk for the children's area, the restaurant was already picking up a sizable line during the lunch hours.
Valerio Architects is proud to have been the architects for this latest Tender Greens location, our 9th completed project for the growing restaurant brand. If you find yourself in Burbank one evening, weekend, or work nearby and are looking for a new lunch spot, be sure to visit Tender Greens and check out the inviting recessed patio and vaulted dining room for yourself.
One of Valerio's recent projects, a professional showroom for RED Digital Cinema, opened its doors today for the first time. The showroom is located in a 'secret' location amongst the high-fashion shops and artists lofts in New York City's SoHo neighborhood, and is designed to serve the professional film, fashion, and photography industry in NY.
The client was very happy with the final store, the culmination of many months of hard work by RED, Valerio Architects, and the project contractor, American Construction Management. More photos of this unique project will be added to the #valerio blog and our website soon.
The Vince Camuto boutique in New York City's famous Flatiron District was completed by Valerio Architects last year. The project is in a historic district and was subject to NYC Landmarks Preservation approval, which wanted Valerio to restore the space to a classic retail storefront from the mundane beauty supply store we started from.
As these pictures show, Valerio designed a new storefront in conjunction with Vince Camuto that is new and modern, yet also references classic storefront design. In the historic photo from 1940, somethings in the neighborhood & society have changed greatly, where many more things have stayed the same. Click through the pictures to see the same store transform from 1940-2014
The latest Tender Greens location in Burbank by Valerio Architects will be opening its doors soon on North San Ferando Road. While these photos show a few finishing touches to be completed, and the installation of tables & chairs, the restaurant is looking good to welcome its first customers next week. Come back to the blog to see photos of the completed store, the opening, and other news about other Tender Greens locations coming soon.
Construction at the latest Tender Greens location at University Center Irvine, across the street from UC Irvine continues along at a fast pace. The building exterior and patio are substantially complete and visible to the center's shoppers and visitors, and we thought they'd like a peek inside.
Interior construction is moving forward, with tilework, base coats of paint, and the ceiling tectum panels being installed. As you can see, there is still plenty of work to finish before the restaurant can open late this summer.
Valerio is proud to announce that we will soon be working with a new client: Slapfish. A self-proclaimed 'modern seafood shack', Slapfish got its start with a food truck on the hungry streets of Southern California before opening their first 'brick & mortar' store in Huntington Beach. Valerio has been speaking with the owners of the concept since their store opening, and have enjoyed their food. Our team is excited to be working with Slapfish on their latest location in Newport Beach, to open early next year!
The Louis Vuitton store at Plaza Frontenac in St. Louis, Missouri, is coming together, as can be seen in these shots provided by the contractor, Dimension One. The millwork package has arrived and is beginning to be installed. It's hard to imagine at this stage, but in a few weeks the dust and hammers and hard hats will be replaced with shiny chrome & exotic hardwoods, and luxury leather goods.
With only a few weeks to go before opening, the construction of the RED Digital Cinema showroom at a 'secret' location in New York City is a frenzy of activity. The big news this week is the installation of the metal cage structure- the main design element which will wrap the showroom floor and provide support for all of the showcases, monitors, and display cases. The finished look of this unique showroom is beginning to take shape, and the #valerio blog will continue to update the progress of this project, schedule to be completed later this month.
Valerio participated once again at California Polytechnic University's (Cal Poly) ENV Career day earlier today. Lydia & Celena represented Valerio and met with lots of interest from current and graduating students. It has been a few years since Valerio has been to Cal Poly Pomona, and it was good to be back.
This was the last career fair on Valerio's schedule for spring 2014 recruitment, anyone interested in applying should visit the careers page on our website.
Oakley's newest NYC Flagship, at 5th avenue and 46th street, is open for business and provides tourists, customers, and lookie-loos alike with a one-of-a-kind retail experience. Oakley produced a short video showcasing this unique store and some of the technology inside, to experience this latest project by Valerio Architects, click below:
Congratulations to Javier Sola for earning his California Architect's license! Javier has been part of Valerio Architect's team since 2012, and has been studying for the last few tests of the ARE (Architect's Registration Examination), when not working on Valerio's Starbucks and retail projects.
This past week Javier took and passed the California Supplemental Exam (CSE), and became a licensed architect- we are all so proud of Javier for a job well done!
Valerio Architects is always looking for talented professionals at all levels to join our team. We will continue our recruiting program at the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) in May. Valerio Architects will be at the ENV Career Day event on Thursday, May 8th, on the Cal Poly campus.
If you are are current /graduating student, an alumni, or otherwise will be in the Pomona area and looking to join a dynamic architecture practice, come by the Valerio Architects table and introduce yourself.
Valerio Architects is pleased to announce that we've begun working with Mendocino Farms- a Los Angeles area sandwich shop which is very popular and has developed a cult-like following in the last few years.
Mendocino Farms has several locations and more planned to open soon. Valerio is excited to work with another great fast-casual dining concept and the great people they have working for them, and look forward to a long successful partnership. Look for more info on upcoming Mendocino Farms projects on the #valerio blog in coming months!
The Starbucks in Old Town Pasadena at Colorado & De Lacey is getting its finishing touches and is nearly ready to open. The power was turned on yesterday, final inspections and LEED Commissioning is pending, and the store is expected to open next week.
The Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams furniture showroom in Beverly Hills, for which Valerio Architects was executive architect, is nearly ready to open. The finishing touches on both the building and the furniture displays are being performed, while city inspectors parade through for final sign-offs. If all goes according to plan, a TCO will be issued and the store will open as early as tomorrow. Keep reading the Valerio blog for more informaton on the project opening.
The construction of the showroom for RED Digital Cinema in New York City continues at a fast pace. Now that walls are closed, finish work is begining and the final look of the space is taking shape.
Pacific Catch in Mountain View, California, Valerio's latest location for the full service seafood restaurant debuts this weekend. The Mountain View location features a beautiful dining room, full service indoor-outdodr bar, and custom covered patio. Final photos of the restaurant will be added to Valerio's website soon!
Special thanks to all our hardworking team members who made this project happen.
Valerio proudly participated again at Woodbury University's School of Architecture's 'Meet the Firms' event held on Tuesday, March 25th. Christina Hernandez and Kellen Carel, both Woodbury graduates, manned the Valerio table and fielded questions from interested students.
Valerio will be at the Cal Poly Pomona's ENV Career Fair on Thursday, April 25th from 10AM-2PM. Interested applicatants can visit the Careers page on Valerio's website for more employment information.
Construction continues at the Starbucks Coffee at Colorado & De Lacy in 'old town' Pasadena. As you can see from these images, the exterior is nearly complete with new signage up, and work continues on the interior. Look for the project to open in a few weeks.
The Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams furniture showroom in Beverly Hills, California, continues to progress as the project contractor works to get the project open this spring. The 12,000 square foot building is an older brick & wooden bow-string truss structure, and will be getting all new paint & finishes to create a bright clean environment to showcase MG+BW's modern home furnishings & accessories.
Valerio was proud to participate once again at USC School of Architecture's Career week, both at the Resume workshop earlier in the week and the Firm Fair held on Friday, March 14th. Damon & Juan from Valerio manned the Valerio booth which recieved lots of attention from current and graduating students, not just for the prospect of their first professional job, but also due to the popularity of the brands Valerio works with everyday- what college student doesn't know or love Chipotle or Starbucks?
Valerio will be at the Woodbury School of Architecture's "Meet the Firms" event, on Tuesday, March 25th from 4-6PM.
As the first step in Valerio's remodel & expansion of the existing Louis Vuitton store at Plaza Frontenac outside St. Louis, Missouri, is to build a temporary store so sales are not interrupted. Valerio has designed several temp stores for Louis Vuitton, but the one at Plaza Frontenac posed a unique challenge- as the only existing Vuitton store around for hundreds of miles, the only fixtures, showcases, and furnishings available would have to come from the existing store.
The temp store was built over a few day's time, and is in a mad dash to finish and open so work can begin on the permanent location renovation.
Valerio Architects constantly seeks talented and dedicated architectural professionals at all levels of experience. We are currently recruiting through local architecture schools, and will be visiting the following recruitment events:
USC School of Architecture Firm Fair- Friday, March 14th, 2014 2-4 PM
Woodbury School of Architecture, Meet the Firms- Tuesday, March 25th, 4-6 PM
If you attend one of these schools or are available to attend, we invite you to stop by the Valerio Architects booth, introduce yourself, and drop off a copy of your resume. Please also visit our careers page for more information
Please stop by the Oakley O Store 5th Avenue Flagship in NYC. We did a soft opening last week.
Join us in early April for the official grand opening celebration!
Framing is about to be wrapped up at the RED Digital Cinema showroom at a secret location in New York City, the spaces are taking shape as the walls, ceilings, and soffit framing is being installed.
Valerio Architects is working with Starbucks to relocate an existing Starbucks in old town Pasadena only 2 stores down from its current location. We're currently planning for the new store which will be opening later this spring. Here's a sneak peek at the new location.
Valerio has been retained to work with Salvatore Ferragamo on the relocation of one of their stores in an existing mall in Southern California. Valerio had been in talks with Ferragamo for some time about working together, as we have experience with some of their team from former projects with other clients.
Ferragamo is known for its luxury leather goods, and is a natural fit for Valerio which specializes in luxury retail interiors and has completed many high-end retail boutiques for clients such as Louis Vuitton, Vince Camuto, and David Dart in Beverly Hills.
The Valerio team is excited to be working with Salvatore Ferragmo's team, and we'll provide more information to the #valerio blog as this first project progresses
The rough framing/MEP is nearly complete at the Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams furniture showroom that Valerio Architects is the local architect for. In addition to this, the steel stair installation, priming, and other pre-finish work continues. Located in Beverly Hills, the 12,000 s.f. showroom will open this spring.
Valerio Architects is happy to announce that we've picked up a new client: Kiko Cosmetics. Known throughout Europe, where they have more than 700 existing boutiques, "Kiko Make-up Milano" is expanding to the United States, and with Valerio's help in providing architecture and procurement services, is looking to open multiple locations throughout the US in the next several years.
The Valerio retail team is excited to begin working with this new client on multiple locations on the East Coast for 2014, including several high-profile locations. More news about these stores will be posted on the #valerio blog when available, so check back often!
Valerio Architects is pleased to announce that we are now working with Italian luxury fashion house / retailer FENDI, a part of LVHM Group, whom Valerio has extensive experience with working on Louis Vuitton stores for the past several years.
Valerio will be working on a remodel of a high-profile Fendi store in Las Vegas, Nevada- more information to come on the #valerio blog as the project progresses. We're excited to be working with a new client, some old friends, and on an exciting project, hopefully the start of many more to come.
This morning the project was formally kicked off and the contractor took possession of the space that will become RED Digital Cinema's new showroom in NYC- the location is strictly 'need-to-know', so we cant reveal it here but will be sharing construction updates of the interior as construction progresses over the next several months.
RED Digital has revolutionized filmmaking, and they came to Valerio to design a one-of-a-kind retail showroom, complete with a screening/projection room.
In this week's Los Angeles Business Journal, Valerio Architects was ranked as Los Angeles County's #10 Commercial Interior Architecture Firm, based on 2013 billings. Valerio joins such well-known and well regarded firms such as Gensler (no. 1), HOK (no. 4), DLR Group (no. 8), and above such firms as HKS (no. 11), and Gruen (no. 16).
Our team has worked hard over the last several years, growing the office in terms of number of clients, projects, and staff, and this ranking is further testiment to Valerio Architect's place as one of the top 10 Commercial Interiors design firms in Los Angeles, and one of the top design firms anywhere for restaurant and retail design.
The mezzanine reconstruction for the Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams furniture showroom in Beverly Hills is nearly complete. The 12,000 square foot building originally had a mezzanine in the same location and size, but was oddly framed and in poor condition due to the original construction having been for a large restaurant/night club, and two smaller restaurants occupying the space. The new design calls for a regular structural grid, wide open spaces below and on top of the mezzanine, and a new feature stair connecting the levels.
Valerio is happy to announce that we will be working on new upcoming Apex by Sunglass Hut locations! Valerio has previous experience with Sunglass Hut stores, and we developed the prototype and many of the first stores of N3L Optics, the predecessor store to Apex. N3L Optics was developed by Oakley, Valerio's long-standing client, once they completed their merger with Luxottica, the parent brand of Sunglass Hut (among others) to showcase active & sports performance sunglasses. In recent years, N3L stores were transferred to Luxottica's team, and rebranded as Apex. We're happy to be back working on some of the same stores we first developed, and looking forward to new locations and new relationships with Luxottica.
The Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams showroom in Beverly Hills, for which Valerio is executive architect, is progressing since the holiday slow-down. Ceiling insulation and cladding is up, mechanical main lines are run, and steel & wood mezzanine framing is underway.
Check back with Valerio's blog, #valerio, for further construction updates.
We wish you a prosperous Holiday Season and a Happy New Year.
Please note that our office will be closed from 3 PM on Tuesday, December 24th 2013
through January 1st, 2014. We will reopen on January 2nd, 2014
Prep work has been completed and all permits are in place, and the contractors have mobilized to start major construction this month at the Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Showroom in Beverly Hills. Demo of the old mezzanine has completed, and footings for the new mezzanine supports are poured, ready for a new steel structure.
Pacific Catch, San Mateo, opened its doors today to an enthusiastic public. For the past six months since word got out, food reviews at their other locations have included fans comments anxiously awaiting the opening of this restaurant.
Consider it an early Christmas present!
Thanks to all our hardworking team members who made this happen.
Pasta Barilla has branched out with their first foray into the US restaurant market, Academia Barilla, now open in Manhattan.
Valerio Architects has been instrumental in developing the Prototype concept and design (see our post earlier in the year when principal Niccolò Valerio travelled to Italy to critique and field-tweak the full scale mock-up built to our design - News 2013-01-13: Barilla Full Scale Mock-up)
Academia Barilla is a great and affordable sit-down lunch option for the Midtown/Rockefeller area that isn't anything like the typical delis of the neighborhood, and we look forward to stopping by on our frequent trips to New York.
California Bay Area concept Pacific Catch is opening its fifth full service restaurant in historic downtown San Mateo.
Valerio architects is sprinting with the team to the finish line for TCO on Monday December 9th, and looking forward to some great seafood at the 'friends & family' on Saturday December 14th!
Well done team!
The construction is well underway at the future Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams jobsite in Beverly Hills, where Valerio is executive architect. Demo has completed, and the existing slab has been cut up for new mezzanine footings, stair footings, and plumbing and electrical stubs.
Congratulations to Kay Elkan for earning her California Architect's license! Kay has been part of Valerio Architect's team since 2006. In that time, she has worked diligently on an number of our restaurant and fast-casual food service projects, and also dedicated herself to studying and passing the ARE (Architect's Registration Exam) and CSE (California Supplemental Exam). We are all so proud for Kay for a job well done!
Our PMs Kay and Melissa braved the cameras and the sharp minds of a group of Senior girls at the Ultimate Mentor Adventure lunch, hosted at the Tender Greens in Hollywood today.
This was part of Disney/Marvel's "Ultimate Mentor Adventure". The group of girls and their parents were selected to participate in this program to explore the potential in science, math, technology and engineering.
Tender Greens hosted this as part of their journey to learn about farm-to-fork, and Valerio is proud to have contributed our portion on sustainable materials and green building practices.
The hard working crew at Valerio took a pre-lunch break to visit the Architecture & Design Museum for a show called Never Built: Los Angeles - a museum exhibit about buildings that don't exist, but occupy the dusty archives of LA as its architects might have shaped it, were it not for a lack of imagination by the powers that be and various local (self) interest groups - ahh, the life of an Architect...
Then it was a hard working lunch break at the ubiquitous food trucks lining Wilshire Boulevard outside LACMA.
The jobsite is transformed into part storage facility, part factory, and part dormitory, as the team from Italy takes delivery of our millwork and begins the laborious install process.
Here are before & after shots of the Starbucks at Verdugo & Olive in Burbank, California, recently completed by Valerio Architects. While it's still the same building, the dated avocado-green exterior has been replaced with a deep olive color, the roofing has gone from Spanish tiles to metal roofing, landscaping has been replaced, and the storefront along the street has been pushed back to create a recessed dining patio.
Leading up to the Louis Vuitton Cup challenge yachting series in San Francisco this Summer, Valerio worked with the Paris design team to create the LV Cup room in the Union Square store from an unfinished storage room.
Not only is this a jewel of a room, but we enjoyed the challenge of creating a backlit fabric wall and ceiling enclosure, celebrating the spirit of yachting and hi-tech sail design.
Starbucks at Verdugo & Olive in Burbank has opened. The high-profile corner location was previously occupied by an old family restaurant, Valerio Architects re-did the building shell in addition to the all-new interiors and 'engine'. As part of the remodel, parts of the exterior walls were removed and the roof kept, to create a recessed outdoor patio at the busy street corner.
This location is one of the biggest Starbucks locations in the area, and already very busy & popular. Features include many elements that are new to Starbucks stores, such as a freestanding merchandise section, a "Wall of Chill", and a Clover tasting station.
Valerio Architect's Starbucks Coffee location at Verdugo & Olive in Burbank, California, is almost ready to open. The team did a walkthrough today at the site, and the workers are putting the finishing touches for the grand opening only days away.
Opening July 3rd, 2013, the Louis Vuitton pop-up store at Pier 27, the Embarcadero, San Francisco.
This pop-up adaptation incorporates the design elements included in the Union Square store we did last year for the Louis Vuitton Cup.
(For the rest of us non-yachting civilians, that's the qualifying challenge series that determines which challenger races the defender in the America’s Cup Finals.)
Yes!, this really is going to transformed into the 'real' version of our prototype for 'Academia Barilla' in New York's Midtown/ Rockefeller area.
Valerio Architects continues to design the new Starbucks location in Burbank, at the intersection of Verdugo & Olive. While there are many exciting elements planned for this store, we wanted to share the latest images of the 'engine'- Starbuck's term for the counter, serving area, and back counter which is the heart of every Starbuck's location
Valerio has surveyed the former Theresa's Family Restaurant at the intersection of Verdugo & Olive in Burbank, California to become the next Starbucks Coffee location by Valerio Architects.
Check back with the #valerio blog for updates to this exciting project!
Principal Niccolò Valerio flew to Italy over the weekend to inspect the new Barilla prototype full-scale mock-up in the factory of the Costa Group.
Located in La Spezia (on the coast, west of Florence), this full service restaurant construction company is prototyping all the elements of our design. From furniture and casework, right through to custom light fixtures and menus, all the elements we are envisioning will be tested, critiqued, and re-built on the spot, in a week long working session with their artisans and craftsmen.
Valerio Architects is currently working on a new restaurant concept for the Italian Food company Barilla, most widely known for its superior pasta products.
In its diversification into the food service sector, Barilla has engaged Valerio to not only design the new restaurant for them, but to manage the entire construction process in the US, from evaluation of real estate, vendor sourcing, design, and construction to turnover.
We are looking forward to the opportunities inherent in this exciting challenge
Eat more pasta, America!
In a time when many architectural offices are stuck in a hiring freeze or being forced to let go valuable staff members, Valerio is proud to be one of a select few offices which is expanding during the current economic recession. Due to strategic cost-cutting moves when the first signs of a softening economy in the construction and design fields, as well as our efforts to both strengthen relationships with existing clients and gaining exciting new clients, Valerio has added three staff members this January. The Los Angeles office saw the addition of Francesco Ferrari, who is a Studio Associate from Rome, Italy. Francesco will be with the office for the next year assisting on many projects, across all studios. Educated at the University of Rome, he has been interested in architecture since a young age, and is excited to work on new projects while exploring Los Angeles.
In the Buenos Aires office, two new staff members increase Valerio's production capabilities on a number of projects. Mercedes Velez re-joins the office, and is joined by Paul Santillan, both Studio Associates under the direction of Jose Larocca. Mercedes is a life-long resident of Buenos Aires and graduated from the University of Buenos Aires. Paul comes from a graphic design background in Ecuador, and has an architecture degree from the University of Belgrano. These new employees increase Valerio's capacity to work on new and upcoming projects as our clients and the worldwide economy recovers. They join the existing Valerio staff looking towards an exciting and successful 2010, and all of new projects that lie ahead.
Oakley has opened a temporary, ‘pop-up' store in the heart of downtown Vancouver, Canada, to take advantage of the crowds heading to the 2010 Winter Olympic Games to be held in the city this winter. The pop-up store, at only 800 square feet compared to a typical 1,200-2,500 square foot permanent store, is planned to be open for only a few weeks surrounding the Olympic ceremonies.
Ideally located at 488 Robson Street, the store is on a main commercial boulevard leading straight to BC Place, the stadium holding the opening & closing ceremonies of the games. The space is currently a retail store at the base of a new mixed-use 20-story tower.
With assistance from Valerio, the Oakley retail team will transform the existing retail space into an Oakley-branded environment in only five days. The space will receive tall super graphics covering all existing walls, new fixtures and lighting, and new illuminated signage on the exterior canopy.
Oakley is a major sponsor of Olympic sports and athletes, many of whom sport Oakley gloves, goggles, jackets, and other ski & snowboarding gear from the company. In addition to the store, the company has set up a hospitality house for their sponsored athletes to relax between trials and competitions. Visitors and residents alike will be able to visit the store (their second company store in the Vancouver area) and purchase the same styles and fashions they see worn on the Olympic courses.
Valerio Architects is working on Los Angeles' newest Chipotle Mexican Grill location, a site on Sunset Boulevard adjacent to both Hollywood and the famous ‘Sunset Strip'. The site, previously an All-American Burger restaurant, is located within a block of several other Valerio projects: Down the street is the recently-opened Veggie Grill, and across the street The Counter Burger Bar will be coming soon.
According to Valerio Project Manager Melissa Velarde, the Chipotle will be one of the first to showcase a new restaurant prototype the chain has been developing for the last few years. "The project will be a new shell, built from the ground-up" said Melissa. "We're adapting the new prototype style guide to fit this unique site- a small site". The project is on a smaller-than-typical corner lot for a Chipotle, according to Melissa. "The tight site has made the design a challenge," she added, but Valerio is "working with the neighborhood on both the context of the building and its sustainability features".
Those features, which are a key element of the new design prototype, include a ‘green wall' on the exterior to soften the building's impact on a nearby residential street. The green wall is a vertical garden of plantings, and will be the first Chipotle with such a feature.
The project is scheduled to begin construction in April 2010, with an expected opening in summer 2010.
Valerio is pleased that they have been selected by Starbucks Coffee Company to work with their local design teams on renovations and remodelings of their Southern California locations, announced firm Principal Niccolo Valerio.
Working with Starbucks is a return to Valerio Architect's roots- when the firm was only a few years old in the early 1990's, some of their work included site due diligence and surveys for proposed Starbucks locations. Now, the firm has re-connected with the Seattle-based coffee purveyor, and will not only provide site survey and due diligence services as before, but complete architectural services including design, documentation, and permitting.
"We've already begun working with the regional Starbucks team on one high-profile location," said Niccolo. "Pending the success of that project, we expect to foster a long-term, successful relationship with Starbucks", he added.
